How to pray for Kids

by Pastor David

Prayer. It’s one of our ten ministry commitments. It’s the expression of our dependence on God, the privilege of our adoption as sons and daughters, the bold access we have to God’s throne, the power ordinary people have to move God’s mighty hand, the worry killer, and the unceasing activity of the obedient Christian. Yet for something so essential, it’s also something we struggle to do meaningfully and consistently. I know that in part because I know me. It seems like my prayer life flounders when I don’t consider why I should pray and how.

So I’d like to encourage you with just a few suggestions for praying for kids. Whether you are a parent, relative, friend, or church family, I’m sure you have kids you can be praying for. When we see in Scripture what to pray for, we see why it’s so important. So how can you be praying for kids?

Pray that kids would not be angered or discouraged by their dads (Eph. 6:4; Col. 3:21)

Pray that kids would be shepherded by diligent and wise fathers (Eph. 6:4)

Pray that kids would learn about Christ’s headship from the submission of their mothers (Eph. 5:22-24)

Pray that kids would have moms who learned to love them from older women (Titus 2:3-4)

Pray that kids would obey the commands of their parents (Prov. 6:20)

Pray that kids would have a church that holds up and holds out the Gospel (1 Tim. 3:15)

Pray that kids would get prudence, knowledge, and discretion from God’s wisdom (Prov. 1:4)

Pray that God would draw our kids to himself (John 6:44)

Pray that kids would believe the Gospel at the earliest possible age (Acts 2:38-39)

We need more than to resolve to pray more. We need the unfailing grace of God to end our guilt about prayerlessness. We need the cross to motivate us to joyful, consistent prayer. We need biblical thinking to pray better. And we need to pray for our children. Will you pray?
